Welcome back to our new blog, "Vivi Deliciis". In case you missed our first post, that translates loosely into "Living Deliciously", as we hope to spend time connecting with our readers on a multitude of subjects with the main idea being to enjoy life and find the beauty in everything around us.
Lately the goal to enjoy life has been made more difficult by rampant inflation which "officially" is running over 9% but realistically is much higher. We can get into the concepts of substitutions and hedonics in inflation statistics in another post, but for now suffice it to say we all know the inflation rate is higher than the official number. We wish the cost of generic, unbranded, frozen chicken at Costco was up only 9% - it was $21.99 for a 10-pound bag in March and that same 10-pound bag has been $39.99 since early May. Hello, 82% in 2 months on a basic food staple. Of course, we completely understand that during times like this it's harder to allocate money to Bellarri or any other luxury item - you may want a new ring or pendant but you need food and fuel and needs come before wants. Dawn and I are just glad that you're still hanging around with us.
Which brings us to the main subject of today's blog post: free movies! With more people "cutting the cord" and switching from cable and satellite to streaming, there are so many choices available for content including Paramount+, HBO Max, Disney+, Netflix, etc. But one option that very few people are familiar with is Kanopy, a content aggregator and streaming service funded and supported by public libraries and universities around the world. In fact, Kanopy is available in 200 countries, yet many people have never heard of it. The best part - it's FREE. If you happen to live in a country or municipality with a library or school that is part of Kanopy's support network, you can sign up for FREE access, all you need is a library card from your local public library. And even that can be gotten online, via website sign-up, without even going to the library.
The only downside is that - at least according to our own subscription settings via our own public library - we only get 10 movies per month. But that's still FREE streaming content, and right now anything that adds enjoyment without cost is worth considering. And Kanopy has a fantastic library of movies, including the older classics, modern blockbuster films, and world cinema from France, Russia, Sweden, Brazil, and many other countries. If you love cinema but haven't signed up for Kanopy, you'll be surprised at how large their library is and how closely their it compares in scope and popularity to the pay-services.
Here's a link to their site, and full disclosure - we are not affiliated in any way, we receive no compensation from Kanopy, there is no financial relationship of any kind. We're just sharing something we discovered. Enjoy!
